If your safety switch is constantly tripping, don’t stress; it’s not broken! This is what it is designed to do. The actual fault is somewhere else in the house. It is just that the switch happens to be the first thing you notice. 

If this is happening at your place in Wollongong or anywhere through the Illawarra region, you’re not going mad. Also, you’re nowhere near the only one dealing with it this week, especially after a wet spell.

This is where we go through, step by step, what exactly a safety switch is, and what the common causes are of why the safety switch is tripping frequently. Along the way, we identify and work out which problem affects you and the tendency for the faults to appear more in coastal homes.

What a Safety Switch Actually Does

That switch is an RCD, the abbreviation for  Residual Current Device. It sits in your switchboard constantly comparing the current going out through the active wire against what’s coming back through neutral. The instant those two numbers don’t match, it means current is escaping somewhere it shouldn’t, usually to earth, and the RCD cuts the circuit in under 300 milliseconds. That’s fast enough to stop a leak turning into a shock.

So when it trips, something upstream of it has already gone wrong. The switch is just the messenger.

Power and lighting circuits in Australian households are mandated to have RCDs (Residual Current Device) by the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules specifically because they are quick acting enough to prevent electrocution, and therefore your tripping RCD isn’t the fault of the switch.

What’s Actually Causing It

In our experience, it almost always comes down to one of these:

  • A faulty appliance. In case of kettles, heaters, washing machines, even a worn phone charger, the insulation inside can break down quietly, with zero warning signs, until current starts leaking to earth.
  • Water’s got in somewhere. In outdoor power points, garden lighting, and roof spaces,  moisture finds its way into places it shouldn’t after a stretch of rain, and that’s often enough to trip a circuit that’s been fine for years.
  • Wiring that’s had enough. Insulation degrades and terminations work loose behind the wall over time, this shows up more in older homes where the wiring hasn’t been touched in decades.
  • Too much load on one circuit. A few appliances, or a couple of hungry ones, all pulling current through the same circuit at once, past what it’s actually rated to handle.
  • The RCD itself has died. Mechanical parts wear out. If this is what’s happened, resetting it is pointless; it needs replacing.

Working Out Which One It Is

Before calling anyone, there’s a simple way to narrow it down:

  1. Unplug everything on the affected circuit.
  2. Reset the switch.
  3. Plug things back in one at a time.

Whatever trips it again is your culprit, you can deal with that appliance on its own from there.

But if the RCD trips the second you reset it, before you’ve plugged anything back in, that’s a different problem entirely. That points to the fixed wiring itself, or a failed RCD mechanism. No amount of appliance-swapping will fix that one. It needs someone with proper test gear, like an insulation resistance tester, tracing the fault through the wiring itself.

A note on repeated resetting: if a switch keeps tripping and you can’t identify why, don’t keep forcing it back on and leaving it. Each trip means current found a path to earth; leave that circuit off and get it looked at rather than resetting it repeatedly and hoping it holds.

Why This Seems Worse Near the Coast

Living by the ocean has its upsides, but it’s harder on your electrics than most people realise. It’s something we see constantly around Wollongong:

  • Salt air eating away at terminals in outdoor points and garden lighting circuits until earth leakage sets in
  • An RCD that trips reliably every time it rains, or the day after a blow off the escarpment, usually moisture in an underground or external cable run
  • Switchboards built up in layers over 40-odd years, 1970s wiring sitting next to whatever’s been bolted on since, often with no real separation between circuits
  • EV chargers, solar inverters, and ducted air-con added to boards that were never designed to carry that kind of load

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to keep resetting a safety switch that keeps tripping? 

Not as an ongoing fix. An occasional trip you can trace to one appliance is fine to reset once you’ve dealt with that appliance. But if it keeps tripping without an obvious cause, repeated resetting just delays finding a fault that’s still there.

Why does my safety switch only trip when it rains? 

This usually points to moisture getting into an outdoor circuit, underground cable run, or external fitting. It is very common in coastal areas like Wollongong after wet weather or a salt-laden wind off the escarpment.

Can I test which appliance is causing it myself? 

Yes, best way is to unplug everything on that circuit, pull the switch out to rest, then plug everything back in, one at a time. You’ll eventually find the appliance tripping it. If the RCD trips before you’ve plugged anything back in at all, then the problem is likely with the wiring itself or the RCD, which you would need a qualified electrician to investigate, with test equipment.

Does a tripping safety switch always mean the switch is faulty?

No. In most cases your RCD is functioning properly and is being triggered due to an elsewhere problem such as a faulty appliance or faulty wiring. The switch itself will only need to be replaced if it develops a mechanical fault, a small minority of cases.
